We all know that in business it is the bottom line that matters. And businesses make money by ensuring that they get a return on their investment. So the Beyond the Balance Sheet team has developed this simple calculator. All this does is work out how much HIV is costing your business right now. Using the calculator means you agree with the disclaimer.
Feel free to plug in your numbers, we dont keep any records. If you would like the figures emailed to you, there is an opportunity to do so.
First some notes on using the calculator.
- This is not a scientific calculator - it gives a rough idea of how much HIV is costing you. We can only manage things we can measure. So the first step on managing HIV in the workplace is measuring all aspects of it - including its cost. We have excluded systemic costs from this calculation, because that needs a lot more time and space to work out.
- HIV prevalence. We ask you to input your countrys HIV prevalence rate. If you are not sure what this might be, have a look here.
- Number of months. Obviously the more information you have the more accurate the end result.
- Payroll. This is the total cost to company of your employees. The total cost over the total number of months that you have data for.
- Number of staff. Relatively easy. How many people do you pay on a regular basis. Exclude contract staff, but include part-timers.
- Company turnover. Simple. Total Turnover, before you pay anyone anything, how much does the company get into its accounts.
- Sick days. Use a bit of common sense here. Obviously you wont count days that are not "sickness" related. so exclude the sick days Joe had when he broke his leg, and that time Mary had a burst appendix and when all the ladies from accounts decided to have babies at the same time. Oh yes - and when the whole office closed because of the hangover from the night before. But count all the "sniffles", "I dont feel so good" and "the doctor signed me off" days.
